Brief Introduction
GIZ has been in operation in Somalia since 1964 as commissioned by the German government and has project offices in seven locations across the country. The current thematic priority areas for the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) are in the promotion of peaceful and inclusive societies, transformation of agri-food systems and support to economic development, training and employment.
The goal of GIZ is to support the capacity development of people, organisations, and institutional structures in the partner countries to enable them to improve their living conditions. The GIZ project portfolio in Somalia has significantly increased over the last few years. The structure of the portfolio is comprehensive, with dynamic modes of implementation adapted to the changing environment in the country. The main commissioning party is BMZ, however, some of the projects are co-funded by the European Union.
GIZ Office is seeking an enthusiastic and motivated IT Intern to support our Information Technology department. This position offers an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a dynamic environment, working alongside professionals on various IT projects.
The IT Intern will support our in-house IT department in providing technical assistance, maintaining computer systems, and configuring hardware and software.
The successful candidate will be able to troubleshoot and resolve technical issues, assist with the implementation of new technologies, and provide training and support to team members. He/She will assist our IT team with day-to-day operations by providing technical support to staff, troubleshooting hardware and software issues, installing new applications, maintaining system documentation, and learning about network infrastructure, all while gaining valuable hands-on experience in a dynamic IT environment.
Responsibilities
▪ Assist in the maintenance and troubleshooting of computer systems and networks.
▪ Provide first-line technical support to GIZ staff, resolving issues related to computer hardware, software, network connectivity, and email access.
▪ Assist with the installation, configuration, and maintenance of computer systems, including operating systems and applications.
▪ Monitor network performance, identify potential issues, and escalate critical alerts to the IT team.
▪ Diagnose and resolve technical problems related to hardware, software, and network connectivity.
▪ Update and maintain IT documentation, including user guides, system diagrams, and troubleshooting procedures.
▪ Contribute to IT projects by performing tasks such as data entry, testing, and implementation.
▪ Support the IT team in implementing software and hardware solutions.
▪ Participate in the setup and configuration of IT equipment and software for staff.
▪ Stay updated on emerging technologies and industry trends through research and training opportunities.
Help ensure IT security protocols and best practices are followed
Skills and qualifications
▪ Currently pursuing or recently graduated with a degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field.
▪ Basic understanding of computer systems, networking, and IT support practices.
▪ Familiarity with operating systems (Windows, Linux, macOS) and common software applications (Microsoft Office, email clients, etc.).
▪ Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills.
▪ Excellent communication skills in English (knowledge of Somali is a plus).
▪ Ability to work independently and as part of a diverse team.
▪ Flexibility and adaptability in a dynamic work environment.
