Overview of position
- Established in 1951, our client is a related organization of the United Nations (UN) & as the leading UN agency in the field of migration, works closely with governmental, intergovernmental & non governmental partners. They are dedicated to promoting humane & orderly migration for the benefit of all. It does so by providing services & advice to governments & migrants.
- Under the overall supervision of the Senior Coordinator (Recovery & Resilience) & the direct supervision of the Water, Sanitation & Hygiene (WASH) & Infrastructure Coordinator & in coordination with relevant departments, support units & sub office teams, the Program Assistant (WASH & Infrastructure) will assist in the planning, implementation & monitoring of our clients WASH & infrastructure activities in Kenya.
- Specifically, s / he will provide technical support to the design, implementation, supervision & evaluation of discrete WASH & infrastructure elements of our clients integrated recovery & resilience program to address the immediate & longer term basic service needs of internally displaced people, refugees & host communities affected by conflict & / or disaster. The Program Assistant (WASH & Infrastructure) will, additionally, assist in the planning & procurement of any construction or refurbishment works related to maintaining or expanding our clients office premises & facilities.
Role objectives
In particular the selected candidate will:
- Support the Program Assistant (WASH & Infrastructure) in preparing technical specifications, Bill of Quantities (BoQs), drawings of shallow wells & boreholes throughout the process from designing, tendering, procurement, installation & operation.
- Carry out site supervision, ensuring that materials are used in accordance with the BOQ; keep records & coordinate with the logistics & procurement unit.
- Regularly monitor the performance of the WASH systems & closely coordinate with the livelihood team for linkage with livelihoods activities.
- Assist in selecting, training & managing water user associations consisting of local leaders & community volunteers.
- Facilitate that the targeted communities and the Department for Water Services (DWS) in target counties participate in program design & delivery, promoting the sense of ownership.
- Plan logistics, administration & coordination of meetings, workshops, seminars, trainings & conferences relevant to WASH & infrastructure at the regional / national level, as well as other events.
- Draft & maintain project reports & records relevant to our clients WASH & infrastructure programming, including research reports, individual beneficiaries files / monitoring reports etc.
- Support the WASH & Infrastructure Coordinator in identifying & documenting good practices, beneficiary stories & lessons learnt from programming.
- Undertake duty travel relating to the project activities, as required.
- Perform other relevant duties as assigned.
Project reporting
This role works under the overall supervision of the Senior Coordinator (Recovery & Resilience) & the direct supervision of the Water, Sanitation & Hygiene (WASH) & Infrastructure Coordinator.
Skills and qualifications
Key competencies
- Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or environmental engineering, from an accredited academic institution with four years in working in implementing WASH programs in humanitarian crisis & community development settings.
- Experience in implementing WASH activities including the construction, repair of wells & solar pumping in humanitarian & development contexts.
- Experience in liaising with national, local governmental authorities & local leaders, national / international institutions, UN agencies & non governmental organizations.
- Experience in working with migrants, refugees, internally displaced persons & other vulnerable groups.
- Prior work experience with international humanitarian organizations, non government or government institutions / organization in a multicultural setting is an advantage.
- Experience in recovery & resilience projects would be an advantage.
- Knowledge on technical requirements of WASH projects such as, but not limited to, bore holes, shallow wells, hand pumps & drift irrigations.
- In depth knowledge of the WASH issues & needs in Kenya.
- Knowledge on migration related subject areas dealt with by the organization advantageous.
- Fluency in English, Somali & Swahili is required (oral & written).
